Horace Mann School, K-5
Home of the Huskies!
Horace Mann School (HMS)
is a candidate for the International Baccalaureate Organization Primary
Years Program. Our mission is to educate and inspire a diverse student
population to become life-long learners who are internationally
minded. Our downtown location enables students to participate in
numerous local field trips and enrichment opportunities through
partnerships with community organizations. These enhance the IB Primary
Years Programme principal subject areas: language; mathematics; social
studies; science and technology; the arts; personal, social and
physical education. HMS students develop their abilities to ask
questions, become involved in concerns of the global community, and
make a difference in the world. Read more about HMS.
Folkloric Dance at HMS A key element of PYP
is the creation of a program of inquiry and development of units of
inquiry. These units are created per classroom but with alignment both
horizontally, within the same grade, as well as vertically, across the
K-5 grades, to insure the success of the student program for their
entire experience at HMS. The PYP builds children's self-esteem by
encouraging them to ask questions that drive the inquiry. Therefore,
they become more independent and responsible for their own learning. By
developing individual talents and setting high academic standards, PYP
students become responsible citizens, thinkers, and international
life-long learners who respect the culture and attitude of others. The
development of explicit attitudes and the expectation of socially
responsible behavior are also essential elements of the program. At the
heart of the programme's philosophy is a commitment to structured,
purposeful inquiry as the leading vehicle for learning.
