The Impact of the International Baccalaureate Programmes
At
each stage of a student's education throughout the San Jose IB Schools
Continuum, we look forward--concerned, first and foremost, that what we
offer today will provide for the student the foundation to be
successful. In the Primary Years Programme, we look to the Middle
Years Programme, and as the students enter the Diploma Programme, we
look to the opportunities that lie before them at colleges and
universities.
Independent studies support what students,
parents, teachers, and administrators have know since the
introduction of the Diploma Programme in 1969--that admissions
professionals at 68 of the 115 most selective and highly selective
universities give preference to IB students. Further, case studies reveal that implementation of IB Programmes ...
- raises academic
standards and changes perceptions towards academic achievement
- increases diversity
within the school
- brings an
international perspective to the classroom and raises awareness around
intercultural understanding
- improves the
reputation of the school in the community
But, how do we convert into numbers university preference for IB
students and case studies that reveal extended benefits of programme
implemmentation? Consider the graph below. IB conducted surveys
in 2002 and 2003 of students on their acceptance rates to various
colleges and
universities and their scores on the SAT, ACT and AP exams. IB North
America
received responses from 6,392 candidates from 131 schools in 29 states
to our 2003
survey.

IB students score higher on SAT and ACT exams, crucial measures of a students preparation for college.
The mean score of
1274 was significantly higher than the average score of the total
population in
2003. Diploma candidates' mean score was
even higher than the mean score obtained by Certificate
candidates. These numbers place the programmes within context
that can be measured. IB students excel.
High
standards, acceptance preference, increased scores, cultural awareness,
and a curriculum that values diversity all point to an unmatched
excellence in education. We bring these IB Programmes to San Jose
through our Continuum partner schools Horace Mann School, Peter Burnett
Academy, and San Jose High Academy. We invite you to further
explore the International Baccalaureate Programmes by visiting the
outstanding site at IBO.org.
